Parinacota (4 days)in Summits
Difficulty: AD/AI 2 - 6132 m.a.s.l.
Mount Parinacota, an almost perfect cone-shaped mountain with a crater on its summit, is part of the Payachatas (“two sisters” in quechua native language). Just as with the other Payachata, Pomarape, Mount Pomarape (also available in the tour of Go Bolivia, the border between Bolivia and Chile passes exactly through its center.
Despite the easiness of ascending it, care is recommended because of its great altitude.
The first ascent was done in December 1928 by Joseph Prem and Carlos Terán from Bolivia. The first accounts of this mountain were published in The American Alpine Journal, in 1945.
La Paz Village of Sajama
Departure from La Paz to the village of Sajama in the morning. During the trip we enter the Sajama National Park, where we can discover the chullpas (tombs) of the Chipaya culture, ancestors of Bolivian people in this region. We can also watch the transformation of the landscape, something indescribable. Then, we arrive at the village of Sajama.
Village of Sajama High camp
We start the day early to take a walk by the geysers, where we can find several hot springs. After having lunch in the zone, we head for high camp of Mount Parinacota.
High camp Parinacota summit Village of Sajama
We leave at dawn attempting to reach the Parinacota summit. Once we reach it, we discover a spectacular view of its crater and the surrounding mountains, both in the Bolivian and Chilean side. After enjoying this summit, we start descending to high camp, where a vehicle will be awaiting to drive us to the village of Sajama.
Village of Sajama La Paz
A relaxed day. First thing in the morning we load our mules and head for Aguas Calientes, where we have a delightful time in a natural hot spring. Then, we continue our journey and pass by a lagoon, where we can see some vicuñas (animals typical of the region). After that, we go through the village of Pomarape, where we have another beautiful view of the Sajama mountain. Finally, we head for the highway to La Paz.
To participate in this tour a good physical condition is required, especially talking about high mountain climbing (altitudes above 5500 m.a.s.l.). This is an ideal route for those initiating in mountain climbing because it does not present further complications; with a good acclimatization chances to reach the summit are many.Top
