General Recommendations
A good acclimatization is necessary to carry out any activity in the Altiplano (high plateau). In general, after two days in La Paz, discomforts (headaches, appetite loss) disappear. Our itineraries are designed to get a progressive acclimatization. Most of them just require a good physical condition and acclimatization capacity.
For your convenience during the journeys, we recommend you «to travel light» and to carry just the bare essentials with you, as compact as possible.
For trekking and mountain climbing, it is imperative to limit luggage weight to 15 kg., in order to avoid overloading porters or mules.
Visas
Western Europe, South America and Mexico citizens do not need visa to enter as a tourist to Bolivia.
For the rest of the countries, please visit the Bolivian Ministry of Foreign Affairs website : www.rree.gov.bo
Environment
Considering that mountain climbing and trekking are outdoor activities, directly in contact with nature, it is essential to comply with some rules of environmental behavior:
Take care of nature.
Do not throw away garbage. If you brought it, you carry it. If you find garbage and it is possible for you to pick it up, many people will thank you.
Start a fire only in the places specifically intended for that purpose.
Do not take any specimen of flora or fauna with you.
As far as possible, walk by the appointed places for that purpose.
Do not scratch, paint or mark on stones or trees. Nobody needs to know you were there.
When relieving yourself, dig a hole of at least 25 cm. and then cover it up. This should be done at least at 30 meters from any water source (rivers, lakes, brooks).
Practice not leaving traces of your stay at a place. This will allow other visitors to enjoy nature intact.
Safety
We should consider three possible problems at the time of starting the hike: accidents, climatic changes and disorientation. That is why:
Take out an assistance program insurance in your country and have the contact phone numbers available in a place with easy access for the people accompanying you. Mention them about these numbers.
Carry a personal first-aid kit and stay in the group (preferably of at least three people)
Prolonged exposure to the sun might be a risk factor. Carry a hat and sun block.
If you get lost, first thing to be done is to stay calm. Then, evaluate the situation, if you are accompanied do not separate from your companion, make yourself easy to find (use bright colors, make noise, shout, use a whistle), verify your map and compass and try to find reference points.
