Descripción
Copacabana is one of the oldest cities in America, as it was already inhabited when the Spaniards arrived in the XVI century. Its name is the adaptation to Spanish of Kopaj Kawana, a native name referring to the spirituality of the city, which now hosts the Virgin of Copacabana, Bolivia’s Spiritual Patron.

Copacabana is located in a calm bay at the edge of Lake Titicaca at 3821 m.a.s.l. and 155 km. away from La Paz by a paved road. Among its attractions are the Isla del Sol (“Island of the Sun”, ritual center of Tiwanaku and the Inca empire) and the Isla de la Luna (Island of the Moon), as well as its Catholic Basilica.

Complementing the attractions are other ruins, such as the falsely called Horca del Inca (Gallows of the Inca), actually a pre-Columbian astronomical observatory that precisely measures solstices and equinoxes. But undoubtedly, the main attraction is Lake Titicaca itself, world’s highest navigable lake, with an area of 8500 square kilometers.

Contrary to the common belief, Brazilian Copacabana was named after Bolivian Copacabana and not the contrary. History tells that Portuguese men returning to Portugal almost were shipwrecked in front of the coast of Río de Janeiro. Once they were out of danger, they attributed their rescue to the image of the Virgin of Copacabana they were carrying on the ship, whose origin is from the colonial Bolivia. And so, they named the current Brazilian beach of Copacabana.

This old Bolivian town can offer you much more surprises.
